 INTERNET

The Internet is a network of networks. It is a worldwide system of computer networks and is also called "The Net". Users on any computer connected to the net can get information available on any other computer connected on the net if valid permissions are available. It was first conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was initially known as the ARPAnet. The original aim was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer in one university to "talk to" the research computers in other universities. Nowadays, it has 

become a great medium for exchanging ideas and information.The lnternet enables the connection between individual computers and between commercial, government, or educational networks. E-mail and file transfers are some of the services offered by the Internet. 

Another popular service provided by the Internet is the World Wide Web (WWW), also called the Web. The Web isa collection of interlinked formatted documents stored in computers around the world. Internet has many applications. One can doe-commerce, banking, messaging, job searches and a host of other activities using the Internet.

Many enterprises have private networks, which are known as Intranets. An Intranet may consist of many interconnected LANS. It can also make use of leased lines in WANs. An Intranet might have a gateway in order to connect to the Internet. The primary purpose of an Intranet is to share computing resources and company information among its employees. It is smallerthan the Internet and can provide access to training, databases, and documents.
